What you'll do

Federal reporting has a house style that is learned on the job and rarely written down, and this project is paying to have it written down. Working from prompts and source documents, you create and refine authentic reporting artifacts: Weekly Action Reports, SITREPs, after-action summaries and executive briefings, plus status, activity and compliance reports of the kind agencies and military branches produce every week.

You also sit on the grading side. You evaluate sample submissions against detailed guidelines for clarity, accuracy, compliance and adherence to reporting conventions; you supply input artifacts and golden reference responses; and you help write the criteria and rubrics used to train and assess AI models on staff writing. Where your experience suggests a task is badly designed, you are expected to say so: consulting on task design is part of the scope.

Expect iterative feedback cycles as client standards shift.

Who fits

All listed as preferred:

  • At least 3 years in federal reporting or staff writing at the US Department of War/Defense
  • A track record producing templated reports: WARs, MARs, SITREPs, after-action reports, executive summaries
  • Background in one or more US military branches, with a range of roles valued
  • Strong writing with attention to tone, clarity and federal style guides
  • Microsoft Office for official reports, memos and briefings
  • The ability to explain reporting methodology and give feedback for training and assessment
  • US-based, with a record of confidential and compliant report handling

Where you can work from

The location line reads "Remote (US Only)".

What it pays

$40–80/hour, micro1's published band. No compensation structure, weekly hours or project length is stated.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Pays for a skill (military and federal staff writing) that civilian employers rarely value directly
  • 20 openings, flagged as high demand
  • A role in designing the tasks, not only completing them
  • Branch background is preferred rather than required here

Less good:

  • US only
  • The profile is narrow: three years of DoD reporting is the stated preference
  • No hours, duration, hiring steps or pay structure published
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage

About this listing

Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal and read on 24 September 2026. The $40–80/hour band, the 20 openings, the US-only location and the qualifications are micro1's published text. micro1 runs a closely related listing, Senior DoD Staff Writing SME, on the same band; this one adds after-action and MAR formats, grading of sample submissions and a task-design consulting role, and it treats military branch service as preferred. The work involves simulated report artifacts; nothing in the ad asks for classified material. See micro1.
