What you'll do
Unlike a from-scratch transcription job, this one starts with a machine draft. An automatic speech recogniser has already produced a French transcript; you listen to the audio, fix what it got wrong, and then enrich the result with metadata tags and detailed annotations so the transcript is useful for more than just its words.
French gives a speech recogniser plenty to get wrong: homophones that differ only in spelling (ces, ses, c'est, s'est), liaisons, elisions, dropped "ne" in speech, and accents from Quebec, Belgium, Switzerland or West Africa that a model trained mostly on Parisian French will stumble over. The ad asks you to spot "nuances, dialects, and errors overlooked by automated tools", which is exactly this. It does not say which varieties of French the audio contains.
You also give feedback to the customer's team on quality and process, and work to project deadlines.
Who fits
- Native-level French, spoken and written
- Proven transcription experience, including correcting machine-generated output
- A background in metadata tagging and linguistic annotation
- Professional-level English, since the customer's team works in it
- Independent, organised, able to juggle several tasks
Helpful extras: audio transcription, linguistic review or localisation experience; some understanding of language technology and ML data workflows; experience in distributed teams. No AI experience is required.
What it pays
$20–36/hour, micro1's published band. micro1 posted the same role for German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese and Korean the same week at the identical band, so this is a standard rate rather than a French premium. The ad does not say what decides placement, or give hours or a project length.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Post-editing a machine draft is usually faster than transcribing from nothing
- Annotation and metadata skills are valued here, not just typing speed
- 15 openings on a recently posted listing
- Remote, with no country restriction on the listing
Less good:
- The floor of $20 is low for the stated experience bar
- Prior transcription and annotation experience is expected
- French varieties in scope are unstated
- No hours, duration or start date published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
