What you'll do

Mercor wants native French speakers to audit speech training data for Amazon's Sonic project. You review, rather than produce, across two collections:

  • Multilingual Transcription Audit: listen to human or agent speech, compare it with the annotator's transcript, tag all applicable error codes, give a pass or fail and a written rationale
  • Forced Alignment Audit: check word-level segments from an automatic aligner, verifying timestamps and reference text, and correcting, splitting, merging, adding or removing segments

French is one of the harder languages to align at word level. Liaison and enchaînement glue words together in speech ("les amis" is heard as one run), silent final letters mean the spelling tells you little about where a word ends acoustically, and dropped "e" and "ne" in casual speech ("j'sais pas") raise the question of what the reference text should contain. Homophones (et / est, a / à, ces / ses) are a classic source of transcription errors that only context resolves.

The ad lists both collections at 5.00 audit hours per task, with a written reason for every judgment, after a short calibration.

Who qualifies

  • Native or near-native French as spoken in France: born and raised there, or fully fluent with five or more years of residence. A hard requirement.
  • Strong English reading and writing for the rulebook, codes and rationales
  • Consistent application of written standards over hundreds of items; transcription, subtitling, localisation, annotation or QA experience is a strong signal
  • Careful listening for similar sounds and word boundaries

Helpful: AI data or evaluation work, phonetics or linguistics, waveform tools.

No current residence requirement is stated, so this listing is not country-restricted.

What it pays

$41.50 per hour, published by Mercor, tied with German as the highest of the nine Sonic audit languages. Italian and Spanish pay $39.50, Japanese $37.50, Korean and Portuguese $25, Chinese $21.50, Hindi $18.

Among Mercor's French audio listings in this set, it sits between the French audiobook QA role ($15–20) and the French speech audio engineer role ($50), which needs professional restoration skills.

Weekly payments on Stripe or Wise. H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are excluded.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Top rate of the Sonic audit family
  • Rule-based, reviewer-level work
  • Remote, self-scheduled

Less good:

  • French connected speech makes alignment slow and exacting
  • English rationales required on every item
  • Hours and duration are not stated; contractor terms
