What you'll do

Mercor is building a panel of French listeners to evaluate text-to-speech audiobooks in metropolitan French. You listen to synthetic narration the way a keen livre audio listener would, then do the careful part: mark the exact span of every error and categorise it in Mercor's review tool.

The ad's error list covers skipped, added or mispronounced words, numbers read wrongly, abbreviations expanded wrongly, unnatural phrasing or intonation, and audio artefacts. In French, the giveaways are usually liaisons (made where they are forbidden, dropped where they are required), silent final letters pronounced, "M." read as a letter instead of "Monsieur", Roman numerals for centuries and kings ("XVIIe siècle", "Louis XIV") garbled, and sentence melody that never rises and falls like a real reader. You also report on the listening experience as a whole.

Who fits

  • Native or near-native French (France), with a real audiobook listening habit
  • Working English for clear reports (bilingual fluency not required, per the ad)
  • Some annotation, transcription, proofreading, linguistics or similar detail work
  • Steady attention over long audio sessions
  • About 20 hours a week, part-time

Nice to have: AI data or audio QA projects, editing, voice or audio production background.

France-based applicants are preferred but the listing is open to people anywhere. Canadian, Belgian and Swiss French speakers are not excluded, though the target accent is France's.

What it pays

$15–20 per hour, Mercor's published rate, the same as the Italian, German, Dutch and Portuguese versions. Mercor's French Sonic audit role pays $41.50 per hour for transcription and alignment auditing, and its French audio engineer role pays $50, so treat this as the entry-level French audio listing.

Weekly payments through Stripe or Wise. H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are excluded.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • No degree or experience minimum
  • Uses a skill avid listeners already have
  • Self-scheduled, remote, weekly paid

Less good:

  • Pay is at the bottom of Mercor's French audio work
  • Four focused hours a day is demanding
  • Contractor engagement: can be shortened or ended early, no benefits
  • Client, tool and project length are not given
