What you'll do
Mercor is recruiting German speakers to audit speech data for Amazon's Sonic project. You check work that annotators and an automatic aligner have already done:
- Multilingual Transcription Audit: listen to human or agent speech, compare the annotator's transcript, tag every applicable error code, give a pass or fail, and write a short rationale
- Forced Alignment Audit: review word-level segments, verify each start and end time and the reference text, and fix errors by moving boundaries, splitting, merging, adding or removing segments
German brings its own audit questions. Long compounds are single words in writing but can have audible internal pauses, so alignment must follow the written unit; glottal stops before vowels help mark boundaries, while colloquial contractions ("haste", "gibt's", "auf'm") blur them. On the transcription side, capitalisation of nouns and "das / dass" confusion are frequent annotator slips, and regional accents in recordings can be mistaken for errors.
Both collections are listed at 5.00 audit hours per task, with a written reason for every judgment and a short calibration first.
Who qualifies
- Native or near-native German as spoken in Germany: born and raised there, or fully fluent with five or more years of residence. A hard requirement.
- Strong English reading and writing for the rulebook, error codes and rationales
- Consistent, disciplined application of written standards; transcription, subtitling, localisation, annotation or QA experience is a strong signal
- Careful listening for similar sounds and word boundaries
Helpful: AI data or evaluation work, phonetics or linguistics, waveform tools.
No current residence requirement is stated, so there is no country restriction on this listing.
What it pays
$41.50 per hour, published by Mercor, the joint highest of the nine Sonic audit languages alongside French. Italian and Spanish pay $39.50, Japanese $37.50, Korean and Portuguese $25, Chinese $21.50 and Hindi $18. Mercor's German audiobook QA listing pays $15–20, so German speakers with transcription experience will find this the much better-paid option.
Weekly payments on Stripe or Wise. H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are excluded.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Top rate in the Sonic audit family, and more than double the German audiobook QA rate
- Objective, rule-driven work with error codes
- Remote and self-scheduled
Less good:
- Every item needs a written English rationale
- Alignment on waveforms is slow until practised
- Hours and duration not stated; contractor status, so your own tax and insurance
