What you'll do
Germany is one of Europe's largest audiobook (Hörbuch) markets, and that listening culture is what Mercor is recruiting for here. You evaluate text-to-speech narration of German books and log where it breaks: each skipped, added or mispronounced word, misread number or abbreviation, unnatural phrasing or intonation, and audio glitch, marked at the exact span with an error category in Mercor's review tool.
German hands a TTS engine specific traps. Compound nouns need the right internal stress, abbreviations like "z. B.", "usw." or "Nr." have to be expanded rather than spelled, ordinal numbers and dates change with grammatical case ("am 3. Oktober"), and English loanwords are everywhere in contemporary fiction. You also give a verdict on the overall listening experience: where the narration carries you, and where it jars.
Who fits
- Native or near-native German (Germany), and a committed audiobook listener
- Working English for reports and team contact (not bilingual fluency, the ad says)
- Some background in annotation, labelling, transcription, proofreading or linguistics
- Reliable concentration over long listening sessions
- Roughly 20 hours a week, about four hours a day
Listed as a plus: prior AI data, evaluation or audio QA work, and a background in editing, voice or audio production. Hörbuch editors and Lektoren would fit that profile well.
Mercor prefers Germany-based applicants but does not require it. Austrian and Swiss German speakers are not excluded, though the target is Germany's standard German.
What it pays
$15–20 per hour, as published. That is the same band as the Italian, French, Dutch and Portuguese versions; only the US English variant is higher ($20–25). Mercor's separate German Sonic audit listing pays $41.50 per hour for a stricter transcription-audit brief, which is worth comparing if you have transcription experience.
Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise. H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are excluded.
Worth knowing
Good:
- No degree or minimum years required
- A natural fit for people already steeped in German audiobooks
- Flexible, self-scheduled part-time hours
- Weekly payment published in the ad
Less good:
- $15–20 is low against German freelance rates for editorial work
- Contractor status means handling your own tax and social insurance
- Hours of focused listening are tiring
- Client, duration and review tool are not described
