What you'll do
The work has two halves, and the second is the one that makes it AI training rather than an ordinary design contract.
First, you produce visual assets to a brief: digital illustrations, layouts and graphics, matched to supplied guidelines and brand standards, and refined through rounds of feedback. Second, you assess existing graphic material and say, in writing, what works, what does not and how to improve it, and you document the methods and rationale behind your own work. Models learn from that reasoning as much as from the images, so a designer who can explain why a layout reads well is worth more here than one who simply makes it read well.
Expect to keep files organised for handoff, and to work with project staff in writing and by voice.
Who fits
- Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Figma or equivalent tools
- A portfolio covering digital, print or branding work
- Experience giving constructive design critique in a team
- Strong written and spoken communication
- A current sense of design trends, visual storytelling and user-centred principles
- The discipline to juggle several deliverables alone and remotely
Any familiarity with AI, machine learning or data-driven design is a plus but not required.
What it pays
$35–105/hour, micro1's own figure. The ceiling is three times the floor and the ad gives no basis for placement; portfolio strength and critique experience are the likely drivers, but plan around $35 until you have an offer. No per-task terms, weekly hours or duration are stated.
How it compares
micro1 also lists a Graphic Designer: Editorial, Poster & Marketing Layout role at $20–50/hour. This one pays much more at both ends of the band and is broader, with critique and written rationale built into the scope rather than a single layout specialism.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A band that tops out well above typical freelance design rates
- No AI background needed
- Critique and rationale writing reward experienced designers and art directors
- Ten openings, flagged high demand
Less good:
- A 3x spread with no stated basis for placement
- Writing about design is a large share of the job, which not every designer enjoys
- Rights and reuse of the assets you create are not addressed in the ad
- No hours, duration or start date published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
