What you'll do

This is the classic design-engineer version of micro1's mechanical work. You build 3D CAD models of simple components in one of the major commercial packages (SolidWorks, NX, Creo or CATIA), read technical drawings to pull out the dimensions, tolerances and specifications that matter, and write component requirements up in a clean, structured form.

The AI-training side is review and feedback: you critique CAD outputs and documentation for accuracy, weigh in on conceptual stress analysis and FEA questions, and give written and spoken feedback that helps validate what an AI system produces in a mechanical engineering context. Collaboration is asynchronous.

The ad specifies "simple mechanical components", so the difficulty is in precision and in explaining your reasoning rather than in modelling complex assemblies.

Who fits

  • 5+ years of hands-on mechanical design engineering, focused on 3D CAD and FEA (listed as preferred)
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, NX, Creo or CATIA; more than one is a plus
  • Able to read and produce complete technical drawings and documentation
  • A conceptual grasp of stress analysis, FEA and engineering validation
  • Clear written and spoken communication and careful documentation
  • Familiarity with the whole engineering process from requirements through validation

No AI experience is required.

What it pays

$55–100/hour, micro1's published figure. No pay structure, hours or placement criteria are stated.

Compared with micro1's other mechanical listings published at the same time, this one sits between the FreeCAD manufacturing role ($40–100) and the Python-heavy Mechanical Engineering Expert role ($80–150).

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Uses mainstream commercial CAD, so no new tool to learn
  • Conceptual FEA only: no simulation pipeline or coding requirement stated
  • 50 openings, flagged as high demand
  • Multi-platform CAD users get explicit preference

Less good:

  • The work is on simple parts, which can feel below a senior engineer's level
  • You need your own licence or access to one of the listed CAD packages; the ad does not say one is provided
  • Pay structure and hours not stated
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
