  • mechanical systems

What you'll do

You watch videos of robots, mechanical systems, tools and people or machines doing physical tasks, and label what is in them: objects, components, movements, actions and how parts interact. Then you use your engineering judgment to check annotations, yours and others', for accuracy and completeness, and flag labels that are wrong or vague.

The mechanical knowledge is what separates this from generic video labelling. Knowing whether a gripper is slipping or a linkage is binding, or which component is actually driving a motion, is the detail the customer wants captured. Hard or ambiguous clips get written feedback.

Who fits

  • At least 2 years in mechanical engineering, mechanical design, manufacturing, robotics or a related field
  • A good working grasp of mechanical components, tools, machines and physical systems
  • The ability to see how parts move and interact from footage
  • Close attention to small differences between clips
  • Good written English and patience with detailed guidelines

Nice to have: CAD experience in SolidWorks, NX, Creo or CATIA; exposure to robotics, automation, manufacturing or industrial equipment; and any prior video annotation, labelling or computer vision work. None of the AI side is required.

What it pays

$50–90/hour, micro1's published band, with no stated basis for placement within it.

How it differs from micro1's other Mechanical Engineer listing

micro1 already runs a Mechanical Engineer listing at $55–100/hour. That one is CAD work: modelling components and critiquing AI answers on design and FEA questions, with a 5+ year preferred bar. This one is video annotation, pays slightly less, and asks for only 2+ years, which makes it the more open door for early-career engineers.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • 200 openings and a "High demand" tag
  • A low experience bar (2+ years) for this pay
  • Manufacturing and technician-adjacent backgrounds qualify, not only design engineers
  • No AI experience required

Less good:

  • Frame-level labelling is repetitive; the engineering judgment is spread thinly across a lot of routine tagging
  • Weekly hours, project length and customer are not published
  • Contractor terms, with no benefits
