What you'll do

You watch recorded sessions of robotic arms carrying out industrial tasks and grade them against the customer's guidelines: tag each session, classify what happened and add comments. The engineering part is diagnosis. When an arm fumbles, stalls or takes an inefficient path, you identify whether it is a mechanical or a control problem, categorise it and explain why it went wrong.

That is a different ask from the generalist footage roles on micro1's board, which mostly want someone to mark when an action starts and whether it succeeded. Here the value is in reading the motion like an engineer: recognising a tuning issue from an overshoot, a compliance problem from a slip, a planning fault from a detour. The ad frames it as training next-generation AI systems for a customer's advanced robotics initiative, so your explanations become the reasoning a model learns from.

Alongside the grading, you check with project coordinators when a guideline or a clip is ambiguous and deliver consistent annotations on the project's timeline.

Who fits

All listed as preferred:

  • A professional background in mechatronics engineering or a close discipline
  • Prior video annotation or data labelling, especially on robotic or industrial automation systems
  • A demonstrated ability to spot and interpret mechanical and control problems in complex machinery
  • An understanding of why and how machines fail, and of robot motion dynamics
  • Experience supporting AI training or machine learning projects, which the ad calls "highly preferred"
  • A record of accurate technical deliverables, and the habits to work alone and asynchronously

Location is given as Northern America, Latin America, Europe, the UK and Oceania. That is a region list rather than named countries, so check your eligibility at application.

What it pays

$50–90/hour, micro1's published band. Nothing is stated about what sets your rate within it, or about weekly hours and project length.

The same band appears on micro1's other robot-footage roles for engineers, including Mechanical Engineer: Video Annotation Specialist and Electronics Engineer. Mechatronics sits between the two, which makes this the natural fit if your background spans both mechanics and controls.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Real engineering judgment is the job: failure diagnosis, not just tagging
  • 250 openings and a "High demand" badge
  • A good hourly band for remote, asynchronous work
  • Industrial automation experience is directly relevant

Less good:

  • Prior annotation and AI training experience are preferred, so pure practitioners may be ranked below applicants who have done labelling before
  • Grading arm footage session after session is repetitive
  • The customer, weekly hours and project length are not published
  • Contractor terms, with no benefits

About this listing

Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal and read there on 30 September 2026. The $50–90/hour band, the 250 openings, the region list and the qualifications above come from the listing. If you have applied to one of the engineering siblings linked above, check whether it is the same project before applying again. See micro1.
