What you'll do
This is the least typical AI training listing on micro1's board: an on-site, cleared role in a secure facility supporting Navy decision-making at the Pentagon. Your naval expertise feeds a customer's AI project, but the day-to-day reads more like a senior analyst's job: analysis of naval operations, platforms and doctrine drawn from fleet, program or intelligence experience; synthesising classified and unclassified data into recommendations for planning and requirements; and writing assessments and briefings for senior military and civilian leaders.
You also coordinate across Navy, DoD, the Intelligence Community and industry, interpret recent developments in naval capability and maritime security, and handle TS/SCI material under facility protocols. How your analysis becomes AI training input is not spelled out in the ad.
Who fits
- At least 10 years in the US Navy, MARAD/DOT or a comparable maritime or defence role, at O-4/O-5 or GS-13/14 equivalent, or with recognised subject-matter authority
- Active TS/SCI strongly preferred; at minimum, a Secret clearance held within the last 24 months and eligibility for TS/SCI reinstatement
- Experience briefing and writing for executive or flag-level leadership
- Familiarity with Pentagon processes, OPNAV, NAVSEA or PEO environments
- Sound analytical judgment in classified or high-stakes settings
- Intelligence analysis or IC experience is a strong asset; a relevant master's degree is desirable
Where it's based
On-site in Arlington, Virginia, or the wider Washington, DC area. This is not remote work.
What it pays
$50–100/hour, micro1's published band. For a cleared, on-site, O-5-equivalent role that is modest; comparable cleared defence consulting in the DC area often pays more. Hours, duration and pay mechanics are not stated.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A way back into Navy-facing analysis for recently separated or retired officers and senior civilians
- Clearance reinstatement is on the table if yours lapsed within two years
- Direct influence on how an AI system supports Navy planning
Less good:
- On-site in the DC area, which rules out most remote contractors
- Pay is low for the seniority and clearance required
- Three openings only
- No hours, duration or pay structure published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits
- The customer is not named
