What you'll do
You answer analytical questions and build scenarios that models tend to get wrong, then articulate the correct answer and the reasoning so the model can learn from it. The ad gives two flavours of example: a data question about which sales location grew the most (where the hard part is choosing the right time period and handling early variability), and a logic puzzle about a postman's delivery order across four neighbourhoods. Day to day you read, summarise and break down content, verify claims through online research, and work with the model on puzzles.
The ad states that no other specialised domain experience is needed, so this is a strong-reasoning role more than a subject-expert one.
Who fits
- High-level English reading and writing comprehension
- Strong algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus at high school or college level
- A systematic, creative problem-solving approach and the ability to explain steps clearly
- Able to work full-time, 40 hours a week
- A laptop or desktop with reliable internet
- Preferred: a bachelor's in maths, engineering, physics or similar (the ad is open to people with demonstrated maths skill and no degree), tutoring experience, and familiarity with LaTeX or Google Colab
What it pays
The ad does not publish a rate. Turing sets rates per project; see Turing.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A formal degree is not required if your maths is demonstrably strong
- The vetting steps are spelled out: an analytical challenge of about 30 minutes, then a business writing assessment of about 30 minutes and a language proficiency test of about 20 minutes
- Fully remote, with possible extension based on performance and project needs
Less good:
- No pay figure
- A full-time 40-hour week is expected on a 1-month contract, with a start date described as the following week
- Some overlap with Pacific time (2 to 5 hours a day) is required
- Contractor assignment with no medical or paid leave; the board date is June 2024, so check it is still open
