What you'll do
You get paid to be the student. Mercor is recruiting Spanish learners for a language-learning platform that wants recordings of genuine lessons: a real tutor, a real learner, and the hesitations, questions and corrections that come with learning a language. Your job is to show up, take part fully and sound like yourself.
In each session you:
- Work through the tutor's lesson structure and assigned topic
- Speak, listen and do conversational exercises in Spanish
- Ask and answer questions naturally, in real time
- Stay on topic and avoid long silences
Sessions must run at least 20 minutes and generally last 20 to 30. They are recorded. The ad does not say how many sessions make up the weekly commitment, but about 7 hours a week at that length implies a lot of sessions or time beyond the calls themselves, so ask how the hours are counted.
Who fits
- Native English speaker with strong spoken communication
- Bachelor's degree or higher
- At least one year of learning Spanish, through school, tutoring, self-study or another structured route
- Basic to intermediate Spanish vocabulary and grammar, and willingness to speak it
- Punctual, reliable, and comfortable being recorded online
Learners from varied backgrounds are encouraged to apply. You do not need to be good at Spanish; the project wants a range of levels, so an honest intermediate learner is exactly the target.
What it pays
$30–37 per hour. The companion Spanish Tutors listing pays $60–65 for the other side of the same calls. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise; Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.
Commitment
About three weeks, about seven hours a week. The ad describes the role as on your own schedule, but sessions are scheduled with tutors, so expect to book time slots.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Paid Spanish practice with experienced tutors, which you would normally pay for
- No need to be advanced; beginners-to-intermediate are wanted
- No country restriction stated
Less good:
- Short: roughly three weeks
- A bachelor's degree is required, which is unusual for a learner role
- Your voice and conversations are recorded for the project's purposes
- Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
