What you'll do

A general software engineering role with a short horizon. You take tasks across development, debugging, code review and technical implementation in a variety of stacks: shipping clean, well-tested code, refactoring and optimising existing codebases, giving and taking code review feedback, collaborating asynchronously on specs and architecture, and documenting your work.

The ad frames the work as the next 2 to 3 weeks, assigned project by project, with an expected 10 to 20 hours a week on the projects you accept.

Who fits

  • 1 to 3 years of professional software engineering experience
  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern language and its ecosystem
  • Ability to scope, implement and deliver features or fixes independently
  • Solid grasp of data structures, algorithms and system design
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Preferred: experience across the stack, Git and CI/CD such as GitHub Actions, exposure to AWS, GCP or Azure, and open-source or personal projects.

What it pays

The board shows $75/hour. The ad does not give a range or payment terms; see the AfterQuery company page for how pay and assessments generally work.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Low experience bar for an AfterQuery engineering role
  • Flexible, asynchronous, project-by-project
  • Broad stack coverage, so you are not tied to one framework

Less good:

  • A 2 to 3 week window, so it is short-term work, not a standing contract
  • 10 to 20 hours a week is a meaningful expectation
  • AfterQuery lists a near-identical ad as Software Engineering Expert, posted in April 2026; this one was posted in August 2026
