What you'll do
This is the European Portuguese version of Mercor's audiobook evaluation project. The variant matters because most Portuguese speech technology is trained on far more Brazilian audio than European, so a TTS voice meant for Portugal is prone to drifting: vowels that should be reduced come out full, the rhythm turns Brazilian, or clitic placement sounds off. Catching that drift is a large part of why a native listener from Portugal is needed.
The core task is span-level annotation. You listen to AI-narrated books, and whenever the voice skips, inserts or mispronounces a word, reads a number or abbreviation wrongly, phrases a sentence unnaturally, or produces a click or glitch, you mark exactly where and pick the error category in Mercor's review tool. You also give an overall verdict on how enjoyable the listen was.
Who fits
- Native or near-native European Portuguese, plus a habit of listening to audiobooks
- Working English for reports and team communication (bilingual fluency is not required)
- Some experience in annotation, transcription, proofreading, linguistics or similar careful review
- The discipline to stay accurate across long stretches of audio
- Around 20 hours a week, part-time
A plus, per the ad: AI data or audio QA experience, or a background in editing, voice or audio production.
Mercor prefers applicants living in Portugal but does not require it.
What it pays
$15–20 per hour, as published. The Brazilian Portuguese version of this project pays exactly the same, so choose the variant you genuinely speak natively rather than the one with more listings. The ad gives no rule for where in the band you start.
Payment is weekly through Stripe or Wise. H-1B and STEM OPT candidates cannot be supported, per the ad.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A rare listing that specifically wants European rather than Brazilian Portuguese
- No degree or minimum experience stated
- Flexible schedule around a roughly 20-hour week
- Weekly payment terms published up front
Less good:
- $15–20 per hour is at the low end of Mercor's audio work
- Four hours a day of focused listening is harder than it sounds
- Contractor engagement that can be shortened or ended early, with no benefits
- The ad does not name the client or say how long the project runs
About this listing
Posted by Mercor as an hourly remote contract, read from the live listing on 24 September 2026. Rate, hours and the preference for Portugal-based applicants are taken from the ad. See Mercor.
