What you'll do
This role puts native Croatian speakers on the attacking side of AI safety: you write the requests a model should be careful with, in natural Croatian, and record how they should be classified. The three tasks in the ad:
- Writing expert-level prompts in Croatian across a range of sensitive subject areas
- Applying structured guidelines to classify prompts and conversations
- Flagging adversarial phrasings and escalation patterns, and documenting the reasoning
What a native speaker adds is the phrasing a keyword list would never contain: regional expressions, slang, indirect or euphemistic ways of asking, and the difference between Croatian and its close neighbours Serbian and Bosnian, which a model with thin Croatian data may not track. The ad is written for Croatian specifically, so fluency in a related variety is not the same qualification.
The sensitive topics are not named. Expect to read and write uncomfortable material as a normal part of the job. Mercor trains you; no AI experience is needed.
Who fits
- Native or near-native Croatian and business-level written English
- A bachelor's degree, completed or in progress
- Strong written reasoning and attention to detail
- Sound judgment around sensitive and dual-use information
Optional extras: reviewing, grading or red-teaming experience with written or technical content, and a trust and safety, content moderation, policy evaluation or adversarial testing background.
Croatia or the wider Eastern Europe region is preferred, but the ad says clearly that applicants elsewhere are welcome, including Croatians abroad.
What it pays
$38–42 per hour, Mercor's published figure, the same as the Ukrainian generalist role. Western European and East Asian generalist versions pay $48–52 and Norwegian pays $58–62. If you hold or are working towards a PhD in chemistry or biology, the Croatian STEM version pays $48–52.
Measured against typical Croatian part-time pay, $38–42 an hour with your own schedule is strong, even though the Western European versions pay more.
Payments are weekly via Stripe or Wise, based on services rendered.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Entry-level bar with a degree in progress accepted
- No AI background required, training provided
- Remote and self-scheduled, immediate start
- 5 hires this month when we checked
Less good:
- Paid below most Western European languages for the same work
- Sensitive topics by design, not named in the ad
- No weekly hours or project length; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
- Independent contractor, no benefits
- H-1B and STEM OPT candidates excluded
