What you'll do

Two filters make this pool small: a PhD (completed or in progress) in chemistry, biology or a close field, and current residence in Belgium with Dutch as it is spoken there. Flanders has a strong university and life-sciences base, so the people exist, but most of them publish and work in English. The job is to use your technical Belgian Dutch to check how AI models handle sensitive science in that language.

What the ad asks for:

  • Writing expert-level prompts in Belgian Dutch on specialised scientific topics
  • Evaluating and annotating model responses for scientific accuracy, helpfulness and appropriate handling of sensitive content
  • Classifying prompts and conversations using structured guidelines

The science spans chemical, biological, and radiological and nuclear areas. The judgment at the centre is dual-use: distinguishing ordinary research and teaching questions from requests for dangerous capability, and checking the model answers the first and declines the second. You are testing the model's safeguards, not producing harmful content.

Mercor trains you on the workflow; AI experience is not needed.

Who qualifies

  • A PhD in chemistry, biology or a closely related field, ongoing or completed
  • Depth to write across chemical, biological, or radiological and nuclear subject areas
  • Native or near-native Dutch as spoken in Belgium, plus business-level written English
  • Currently based in Belgium. This is a stated location requirement, and the ad notes that Netherlands Dutch is covered by a separate role
  • Deep familiarity with current laboratory and computational techniques in your subfield
  • Sound judgment on scientific safety and dual-use information

Also valued: depth in one subfield (organic or inorganic synthesis, molecular biology, microbiology, virology, genetics and similar), radiological and nuclear coverage from chemistry (radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry, energetic materials, radiation physics), research or coursework on chemical security, biosafety or hazardous-materials handling, and experience reviewing, grading or red-teaming technical content.

What it pays

$61–65 per hour, Mercor's published figure. The Belgian Dutch generalist role pays $48–52, so the PhD is worth $13 an hour. The Finnish and Danish STEM versions pay the same $61–65.

Payments are weekly via Stripe or Wise, based on services rendered. Check how contractor income fits your Belgian tax and social-security status before starting; the ad does not cover it, and for a PhD researcher on a university contract it is worth asking your institution about side activities too.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Strong hourly rate for flexible remote part-time work
  • Doctoral candidates are eligible
  • Active: 9 hires this month when we checked
  • The Belgium requirement limits competition

Less good:

  • Must be living in Belgium
  • Hazardous-science material throughout
  • No stated weekly hours, project length or end client; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
  • Independent contractor with no benefits
  • H-1B and STEM OPT candidates excluded
