What you'll do
This is forecasting and research data for AI macro analysis, and it is staffed one central bank at a time. The ad is explicit that a broad global-macro profile is not enough: Mercor wants someone who knows one specific non-G7 central bank the way its own watchers do.
Each task sets a fixed evidence cutoff. Working only from what was known at that moment, you:
- Interpret the bank's statements, minutes, speeches and wording changes in their original language
- Compare the new language with prior guidance and with what the market expected
- Assign a calibrated score on a dovish-to-hawkish scale and set out the implications for rates, FX and equities
- Review AI-generated analyses of the same material and grade them against your own
The cutoff discipline is the core of the job. Tasks are graded on reasoning without hindsight, data leakage, confidential information or material non-public information. For someone who lived through the decision in real time, the hard part is often forgetting what happened next.
Who fits
- A former economist or adviser at the relevant central bank, or a senior local rates or FX strategist who covered it across several policy cycles
- Professional fluency in the bank's source language
- Deep knowledge of the bank's reaction function and communication style, from reading it live
- Typically 8+ years of direct experience, or unusually strong evidence of equivalent performance
Backgrounds screened first: the central bank itself, the BIS, the IMF, leading local institutions, emerging-markets teams at global banks, and established macro funds. The ad says brand names are a first-pass signal, not a gate; direct experience and the work sample decide.
The work is managed in English, but the source-language requirement depends on which central bank you cover. The ad does not list which banks are being staffed, so name yours clearly in the application.
What it pays
$150–250 per hour, paid weekly on Stripe or Wise. This is among the highest bands Mercor publishes for finance work, shared with the sister Equity Research Expert listing that uses the same point-in-time format. The ad gives no basis for where you land within the band.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Top-tier rate for genuinely niche expertise
- Local-market strategists qualify alongside ex-central bankers
- No residence restriction published
- A rare paid use for fluency in a non-English policy language
Less good:
- Narrow: one bank per expert, so demand depends on whether yours is being staffed
- A work sample decides who qualifies
- No weekly hours or project length stated
- H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded; contractor terms, projects can end early
