What you'll do

Most equity research AI work asks you to judge a model's view of a stock. This one asks you to model the analyst. Given a catalyst (an earnings print, a guidance change, a deal), you forecast when a specific, named sell-side analyst will publish and what their update will contain: estimate changes, rating, target, tone.

The work breaks down into:

  • Forecasting the timing and content of a named analyst's post-catalyst note
  • Reasoning from filings, earnings, transcripts, consensus estimates, valuation and ratings to the view you expect them to publish
  • Documenting the internal workflow that governs how and when a research report actually gets out the door (models updated, compliance review, morning-meeting timing)
  • Grading AI-generated analyses against your own

All of it runs under point-in-time rules. Tasks are graded on reasoning from the stated cutoff without hindsight, data leakage, confidential information or material non-public information.

Who fits

  • A former lead sell-side equity analyst, or a very senior research associate, who personally published post-catalyst research in the exact sector being covered
  • Command of the full toolkit: filings, earnings, transcripts, estimates, valuation, ratings and the production workflow behind a report
  • Typically 8+ years of direct experience, or unusually strong evidence of equivalent performance

Backgrounds screened first are Institutional Investor-ranked teams and franchises such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citi, UBS, Barclays, Bernstein, Jefferies and Wolfe Research. The ad also says that former colleagues, direct coverage rivals and senior buy-side readers of a named analyst's work are "especially valuable", because they know how that person behaves. Brand names are only a first-pass signal; the work sample decides.

What it pays

$150–250 per hour, paid weekly on Stripe or Wise. The band matches Mercor's Central Bank Expert listing, which uses the same point-in-time forecasting format for monetary policy.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Among the highest finance rates Mercor publishes
  • Buy-side readers and rival analysts count, not just the analyst's own team
  • Uses judgment that rarely has a market outside a research department
  • No residence restriction published

Less good:

  • Sector-specific: your coverage has to match what is being staffed
  • Forecasting a named individual may sit awkwardly if you still work alongside them; check your employer's outside-work rules
  • No weekly hours or project length stated
  • H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded; contractor terms, projects can end early
