  • ai output evaluation

What you'll do

Mercor is working with an AI lab to teach models how insurance professionals actually think. You supply the realism: scenarios and tasks taken from your own working week, and a professional eye on what the model gets wrong.

The work has three strands:

  • Scenario design: realistic tasks from your practice area, such as an underwriting decision, a claim to adjudicate, a coverage question, a pricing or reserving problem, or a compliance review
  • Output review: comparing AI-generated insurance answers for accuracy, sound judgment and regulatory compliance
  • Structured examples and feedback: written reasoning that shows how a professional works the problem, plus clear notes on how the AI should improve

Everything is asynchronous, with the research team collaborating remotely.

Who fits

The listing is deliberately broad: underwriting, claims, actuarial, risk management, brokerage, compliance, reinsurance and policy or product roles all qualify, whether you work at a carrier, a broker or agency, a reinsurer or an advisory firm. The ideal profile:

  • 3+ years of professional insurance experience
  • A bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Comfort with the everyday tooling: policy administration, claims and rating platforms, and Excel
  • Strong written communication and attention to detail

A professional credential is preferred but not required. The ad names CPCU, ARM, AINS, CLU, AIC, the actuarial ACAS/FCAS or ASA/FSA, and state adjuster or broker licences.

Applying

The process is short by Mercor's standards: a résumé or a brief summary of your insurance background, a form on your practice area, specialties and certifications, and for some applicants a short sample task. Mercor says follow-up usually comes within a few days.

Use the form to be specific. "Commercial property underwriting, mid-market, 6 years" gives a reviewer far more to route on than "insurance professional".

What it pays

$75 per hour, a single published figure, with weekly payment on Stripe or Wise. Strong contributors can move into reviewer, lead and domain-expert roles, per the ad.

Compare it with the specialist listings from the same program before applying: Insurance Actuarial Specialists and Insurance Underwriting Specialists both pay $80/hour, while the broader Insurance Experts listing pays $50–60. If you are an actuary or underwriter, the specialist routes pay slightly more.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Every insurance specialty is welcome, not only actuarial or underwriting
  • Quick, light application with a stated few-day turnaround
  • A published progression path into reviewer and lead roles
  • Actively hiring: Mercor showed 12 hires on this listing in the current month when we checked

Less good:

  • US-based only
  • $5 an hour less than the actuarial and underwriting specialist listings
  • Weekly hours and project length are not stated
  • H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
  • Independent contractor, and projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
