What you'll do

An unnamed AI research organization wants the real ChatGPT histories of heavy users in Japan for model research and evaluation. Mercor runs the recruitment.

There are two phases:

• Phase one, a one-time deliverable: sign a consent form granting access to your personal ChatGPT history, link or share it as instructed, provide the email address on the ChatGPT account, and self-verify your eligibility.
• Phase two, ongoing project work on the same program. Unlike the sister listings for Korea, Indonesia and Mexico, the Japan ad says people who complete phase one will be invited, not may be. What the phase two work is remains undescribed.

The application contains a required ChatGPT Power User Interest Form. Skip it and the application is not considered.

Who qualifies

The Japan ad is visibly copied from a template and garbled in places: it asks for a "Native Japan" speaker with conversations "primarily in Japan". Read it as a native Japanese speaker whose conversations are mainly in Japanese, which is what every sister listing asks. The full list:

• Based in Japan, having lived and studied there for at least 3–5 years
• Native Japanese speaker, ChatGPT conversations mainly in Japanese
• 40+ conversations in the past nine months
• At least one saved memory
• A personal account older than 3 months

Work, employer and enterprise accounts are excluded, as is any account containing proprietary or confidential material. Verification by the research organization can take up to two weeks after consent.

What it pays

$50 per hour, Mercor's published figure, with weekly payment on Stripe or Wise. Phase one is described as deliverable-based, and the ad does not spell out what that one step pays in practice. Confirm the figure before you sign the consent form.

Think before you share

Your history is personal data: whatever you have asked ChatGPT about health, money, family or work is in it. Scroll through the account before consenting and decide whether a third party reading it is acceptable to you. Anything you pasted in from an employer is out of scope and a reason to reconsider.

Worth knowing

Good:

• Qualification is your usage history, not a CV or a test
• The ad promises a phase two invitation to everyone who completes phase one

Less good:

• You hand over your own conversations, with no stated retention period
• The research organization is not named
• The ad's eligibility wording is garbled, so ask if anything is unclear
• Up to two weeks to hear whether you qualify
• H-1B and STEM OPT holders excluded; contractor terms, and projects can end early
