What you'll do

This is the electrical member of a four-listing Mercor hardware family, and the broadest in scope: it names five specialties, namely RF and antennas, power electronics, analog and mixed-signal, hardware and PCB design, and signal integrity.

Per the ad, you review hardware designs, engineering workflows, technical analyses and troubleshooting approaches, and analyse design trade-offs, failure modes, measurements and test results. The job is to spot errors, missing assumptions, unrealistic recommendations and design risks in solutions generated for real hardware problems: the converter design that ignores switching losses, the layout advice that would wreck a return path, the RF answer that forgets the matching network. You also develop or review engineering problems, reference solutions and evaluation criteria.

Compared with its siblings the ad is shorter and less prescriptive about tools, which leaves more room for specialists whose lab setup does not match a checklist.

Who qualifies

  • 5+ years of industry experience, with at least 3 recent years hands-on in hardware development, test, bring-up, validation or troubleshooting
  • Having been the responsible engineer for substantial parts of a hardware workflow, rather than only managing teams or projects
  • Deep expertise in at least one of: RF systems, antennas and RF validation; power conversion, motor drives or power delivery; analog or mixed-signal circuits; PCB architecture, schematics, bring-up and debugging; signal and power integrity, high-speed interfaces and electrical validation
  • A practical grasp of component selection, tolerances, measurement, manufacturing, reliability, thermal limits and system integration
  • Debugging real hardware with lab equipment, simulation tools and instrumentation

Hardware-company experience is strongly preferred, from the same long list of example employers as its siblings.

Application involves a resume, Mercor's domain expert interview, a work authorisation step and the "Hardware Engineering SME" screening shared across the family.

What it pays

$100–120 per hour, paid weekly via Stripe or Wise. Mercor's older Electrical Engineering Expert listing pays $70–80, and its Electrical Design Specialist $70–85, so this family sits $20–40 an hour higher for a stricter hands-on bar. Hours and duration are not stated.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Five named specialties, so RF, power and SI engineers all have a clear home
  • Top of Mercor's electrical pay range when we read it
  • Weekly payment, no country restriction stated
  • No access to any employer's confidential information, per the ad

Less good:

  • Design-review experience alone is not enough; the ad wants bench time
  • Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates
  • No hours, volume or duration published; projects can end early
  • Independent contractor: no benefits, your own tax to manage
