What you'll do

Classic speech-data work, with the difficulty concentrated where Cantonese is hard for machines. You transcribe and annotate recordings in Cantonese and English, clean up automatic transcripts, and deliver time-stamped files that meet the project's formatting rules.

The ad lists English alongside Cantonese, which in practice usually means code-switched speech: a Hong Kong speaker dropping English terms mid-sentence is exactly the case automatic systems get wrong. You also correct for accents, regional variation and context cues, flag ambiguous passages to project leads, and pass on linguistic observations that help improve the training data.

Expect guideline-driven detail work: how to render colloquial Cantonese characters, when to use written-standard forms, how to mark overlaps and unclear speech. Those rules usually come from the client, and consistency with them matters as much as your ear.

Who fits

All listed as preferred:

  • Native Cantonese with a good grasp of regional dialect variation
  • Professional audio transcription experience, particularly Cantonese and English
  • Proficiency with transcription tools and audio playback software
  • Typing in both traditional and simplified Chinese
  • Strong attention to detail and linguistic sensitivity
  • Experience reviewing or annotating linguistic data for tech, media or research is a plus
  • Independent, deadline-reliable remote work

No country requirement is stated.

What it pays

$20–35/hour, micro1's published band. No compensation structure, weekly volume or project length is stated. Transcription is often paid by audio minute in practice, so confirm whether this is truly hourly.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • No AI experience needed
  • Uses a skill (Cantonese plus written Chinese in both scripts) that is genuinely scarce in speech-data work
  • Remote, with no country list

Less good:

  • Only one opening
  • The band is on the low side; micro1's Cantonese Language Evaluator listing pays $30–40/hour
  • Nothing on hours, volume, deadlines or hiring steps
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
