What you'll do
Although the title says only "Portuguese", this listing is specifically for Brazilian Portuguese. Mercor needs native speakers to audit speech data for Amazon's Sonic project across two collections:
- Multilingual Transcription Audit: listen to human or agent speech, check an annotator's transcript against it, apply every relevant error code, give a pass or fail and a brief written rationale
- Forced Alignment Audit: review word-level segments produced by an automatic aligner, confirming timestamps and reference text, and adjusting, splitting, merging, adding or removing segments where it went wrong
In Brazilian speech, the audit calls usually hinge on connected speech: "está" said as "tá", "para" as "pra", vowels merging across word boundaries so one segment really spans two words, and reduced final vowels. Whether the transcript should capture the spoken form or the standard spelling is a rulebook question you have to answer the same way every time.
The ad describes both collections as 5.00 audit hours per task, with a written reason behind every judgment, and a short calibration before production.
Who qualifies
- Native or near-native Portuguese as spoken in Brazil: born and raised there, or fully fluent after five or more years of residence. A hard requirement.
- Strong written English for the rulebook, error codes and rationales
- Consistent application of written standards; transcription, subtitling, localisation, annotation or QA experience is a strong signal
- Careful listening for similar sounds and word boundaries in fast speech
Helpful: AI data or evaluation work, phonetics or linguistics, waveform tools.
No current residence requirement is stated, so this listing is not country-restricted.
What it pays
$25 per hour, as published, matching the Korean version. For comparison across the nine Sonic audit languages: Hindi $18, Chinese $21.50, Japanese $37.50, Italian and Spanish $39.50, French and German $41.50. Mercor's Brazilian Portuguese audiobook QA listing pays $15–20, so this is the better-paid Brazilian audio role in the current set, in exchange for stricter, rule-bound work.
Weekly payments on Stripe or Wise. H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are excluded.
Worth knowing
Good:
- USD rate that compares well with Brazilian freelance transcription work
- Audit experience that transfers to QA and reviewer roles
- Remote and self-scheduled
Less good:
- The title can mislead European Portuguese speakers; the requirement is Brazilian Portuguese only
- Written English rationales for every task
- Hours and duration not stated; contractor terms
