What you'll do

Read roughly four hours of scripts for a Mercor client described as a leading AI research lab. The material mixes conversational, narrative and instructional writing, and some lines need several takes with different emphasis or mood. The client then builds a cloned version of your voice for its internal "CX AI Agent". A second session of similar length may follow; it is not guaranteed.

The ask here is an authentic Australian accent, not a neutralised "mid-Pacific" one. Australian listeners are quick to notice a voice that sounds imported, and a customer agent that sounds local is presumably what the client is after. Time zones are a practical point: the ad says the work runs on your own schedule, but a live directed session would likely be arranged around US hours. The ad does not say whether sessions are self-recorded or directed.

Who fits

  • Native English speaker with an authentic Australian accent
  • Currently based in Australia
  • A clear, expressive voice; acting, narration or broadcast experience is optional
  • A near-professional home setup: good microphone, pop filter, quiet room
  • Control of intonation, diction and emotional range, reading accurately
  • About four hours for one session, possibly another later

Preferred: TTS, audiobook, IVR or AI voice dataset experience, audio editing in Audacity, Adobe Audition or Reaper, and range across conversational, corporate, energetic and calm reads.

Australian voiceover work for radio ads, on-hold messages and e-learning is directly relevant, and a short sample in that register is a good thing to have ready.

What it pays

$50–100 per hour in US dollars, about $200 to $400 for the stated session, paid weekly via Stripe or Wise. Converted to Australian dollars the figure looks larger, though conversion fees take a slice. Same band as the UK and South African English variants; the general US variant reaches $150.

What you are licensing

The client's right to clone your voice. The ad states the recordings will be used only for the client's internal CX AI agent and not sold, licensed or reused for any other product, dataset or purpose. Missing: the client's name, how long the clone may be used, any mechanism to withdraw consent, and any payment for continued use. Get those terms in the contract before you record.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • Your natural Australian accent is the qualification
  • Newcomers with a good voice and setup can apply
  • Short, defined engagement
  • Written limit on reuse of the recordings
  • Weekly Stripe or Wise payment

Less good:

  • Your voice may be cloned, and the ad mentions no payment for continued use
  • The ad says little about how the voice will be used: no client, no duration, no withdrawal right
  • About $200–400 per session, and a second session is not guaranteed
  • Paid in USD, with conversion costs
  • The ad does not say how sessions are scheduled across time zones
  • Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
  • H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
