What you'll do
You are paired with another participant for short, real-time English conversations built around what one of you is showing on camera. One person is the camera user, who films everyday objects and actions with a phone from a first-person view. The other is the guide, who watches the live video from somewhere else and responds by voice. You work in one of the two roles, set up simple scenes with items you already own, and complete a batch of paired recordings of about 1.5 minutes each plus setup time. A short online onboarding comes first, and the sessions are scheduled in advance.
The recordings capture real-time speech tied to what is visible, the sort of data used to train multimodal AI that has to follow spoken instructions about a scene.
What you need
- 18 or older and a native English speaker
- A smartphone with a working camera
- Headphones or earphones for every session
- A stable internet connection
- A quiet indoor space with no TV, music or other people in the background
- Comfort with your voice being recorded and your hands and surroundings appearing on video (your face does not appear)
- Discipline to keep other people, personal documents and private screen content out of shot
- Residence in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand or Canada
What it pays
The ad states a range of $20–30/hour, in US dollars. It does not say what decides where you land in that range, whether the role you take (camera user or guide) changes it, or whether setup time and onboarding are paid. It does not say how payment is made.
Worth knowing
Good:
- No qualifications beyond native English and a phone
- Very short recordings, so the work is easy to fit around other commitments
- Your face is not recorded
Less good:
- Sessions are scheduled in advance with a partner, so you cannot simply work when you like
- Your voice, hands and home surroundings are recorded, which not everyone is comfortable with
- The rate is at the low end of Rex.Zone's listings, and the ad gives no information on how many batches are available
