What you'll do
Record roughly four hours of English scripts, from conversation to narration to instructions, for a Mercor client described as a leading AI research lab. Some lines need alternate takes with a different mood or emphasis. The recordings are used to clone your voice for the client's internal "CX AI Agent". A second session of similar length may follow; it is not guaranteed.
South African English is one of the less common accents in commercial voice systems, and this listing wants an authentic one rather than a softened, internationalised read. The ad does not say which South African accent it prefers (the country has several distinct English accents), so describe your own honestly when you apply.
Who fits
- Native English speaker with an authentic South African accent
- Currently based in South Africa
- A clear, expressive voice; acting, narration or broadcast experience is optional
- A near-professional home setup: good microphone, pop filter, quiet room
- Control of intonation, diction and emotional range while staying on script
- About four hours for one session, possibly another later
Preferred: TTS, audiobook, IVR or AI voice dataset work, audio editing in Audacity, Adobe Audition or Reaper, and range across conversational, corporate, energetic and calm reads.
One practical check the ad does not mention: a four-hour session needs reliable power and connectivity. If load-shedding affects your area, plan backup for your recording setup before booking.
What it pays
$50–100 per hour in US dollars, about $200 to $400 for the stated session, paid weekly via Stripe or Wise. Converted to rand this is a high hourly rate by local standards, though it is a one-off amount rather than steady income. Same band as the UK and Australian variants.
What you are licensing
The client's right to clone your voice. The ad restricts the recordings to the client's internal CX AI agent and rules out sale, licensing or reuse for any other product, dataset or purpose. It does not name the client, set a time limit, provide a way to withdraw consent, or mention payment for continued use. South Africa's POPIA treats voice recordings as personal information, so ask how yours will be stored; the ad is silent on it.
Worth knowing
Good:
- An authentic South African accent is specifically wanted
- USD pay, strong in local terms
- Newcomers with a good voice and setup can apply
- Short, defined engagement
- Written limit on reuse of the recordings
Less good:
- Your voice may be cloned, and the ad mentions no payment for continued use
- The ad says little about how the voice will be used: no client, no duration, no withdrawal right
- About $200–400 per session, with no guarantee of a second
- A four-hour session needs stable power and internet
- Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
- H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
