What you'll do

A Mercor client (a "leading AI research lab", unnamed) is building a Mexican Spanish voice for its internal "CX AI Agent". You record around four hours of scripts, from casual conversation to narration to instructions, with extra takes where they want a different tone. The audio is then used to clone your voice. A second session of similar length may come later, without guarantee.

Unlike the pan-regional Latin American listing, which asks for neutral Spanish, this one wants a native Mexican accent. Mexico is the largest Spanish-speaking market, and a customer agent that sounds Mexican rather than generically "Latin American" is presumably the point. The listing showed one hire in the current month when we read it, so it is actively being filled.

Who fits

  • Native Mexican Spanish speaker, currently living in Mexico
  • A clear, expressive voice; acting, narration or broadcast experience helps but is not required
  • A near-professional home setup: good microphone, pop filter, a quiet room (street noise is the usual problem in city apartments)
  • Control of intonation, diction and emotional range while reading exactly what is written
  • About four hours for one session, possibly more later

Preferred: TTS, audiobook, IVR or AI voice dataset work, audio editing in Audacity, Adobe Audition or Reaper, and range across conversational, corporate, energetic and calm reads.

Mexico City has a large dubbing industry, and anyone who has worked in doblaje or locución comercial will find the brief familiar.

What it pays

$50–100 per hour in US dollars, roughly $200 to $400 for the session. Payment is weekly via Stripe or Wise. By local standards that is a strong hourly rate, but it is a one-off amount rather than ongoing income. Same band as the Latin American, Peru and Peninsular Spanish variants.

What you are licensing

Your voice, for cloning. The ad asks you to apply only if you accept that, and limits the use of the recordings to the client's internal CX AI agent: no sale, licensing or reuse for other products, datasets or purposes. It does not name the client, say how long the clone will be used, allow for withdrawing consent, or mention pay for ongoing use. A clearly Mexican voice answering customers is recognisable to people who know you, so get the contract terms in writing before recording.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A real Mexican accent is what is wanted, not neutralised Spanish
  • Active: one hire this month when we checked
  • Newcomers with a good voice and setup can apply
  • USD pay, weekly via Stripe or Wise
  • Written limit on how the recordings can be used

Less good:

  • Your voice may be cloned, and there is no mention of payment for continued use
  • The ad says little about how the voice will be used: no client name, no duration, no withdrawal right
  • Roughly $200–400 total unless a second session is offered
  • Home studio quality is your responsibility
  • Independent contractor; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
  • H-1B and STEM OPT holders are excluded
