What you'll do
This is taste work. You are given collections of images that have already been filtered for aesthetic quality, and your job is to pick out the ones that are genuinely exceptional: composition, lighting, colour, styling, originality and technical execution. Then you say why, in clear written feedback.
The selections and the reasoning become training data for a model's sense of what a strong image looks like, so consistency matters as much as eye. You calibrate with other visual specialists and the project trainers on shared standards, apply them across very different genres and formats, and adjust as the guidelines evolve.
Think of it as the final round of a photo competition judged hundreds of times over, where every pick needs a sentence that would survive another judge's challenge.
Who fits
- Expertise in evaluating or creating visual work: photography, art direction, graphic or brand design, illustration or curation
- The ability to see and articulate strong composition, lighting, colour and originality
- A portfolio or track record that shows taste and rigour
- Strong written feedback skills
- Prior roles involving critical selection of images (photo editing, picture desks, juries, stock review)
- Current awareness of visual trends and cultural references
- Self-motivation to hit deliverables remotely
No AI experience is required.
What it pays
$35–105/hour, micro1's own figure, the same band as its Graphic Designer listing posted the same day. The ceiling is three times the floor with no published basis for placement; a strong curation or photo-editing record is the plausible lever, but plan around $35 until you see an offer. No per-task terms, hours or duration are stated.
How it differs from the Graphic Designer listing
Both pay the same and both reward articulate critique. The Graphic Designer role also has you producing assets; this one is purely selection and evaluation, which suits picture editors, curators and art directors who judge more than they make.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Picture editors, curators and jurors have few AI training roles aimed at them; this is one
- A high ceiling
- No production work, only judgment and writing
- 20 openings, flagged high demand
Less good:
- A 3x band spread with no stated placement criteria
- Calibrating to a shared standard can feel at odds with personal taste
- Volume evaluation of images is repetitive
- No hours, duration or start date published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
