What you'll do
This one is for the bioinformatician who lives in the terminal. You design, evaluate and critique computational biology workflows used in AI benchmarking, with genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic analysis pipelines as the core material. In practice that means judging whether pipeline parameters, tool configurations and statistical methods give accurate, reproducible results on datasets such as NGS, RNA-seq, variant calls and protein structures, and recommending fixes where they do not.
You also help guide how biology-related AI models and tools are developed and validated, write up methods and best practice for the customer's team, and explain technical points both in writing and verbally to people outside the field. The engagement is remote and contractor based; the ad does not give hours.
Who qualifies
- A PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics or a related field, or equivalent industry or research experience
- Hands-on analysis of real biological data (NGS, RNA-seq, variant analysis)
- Python and/or R, plus standard tools such as BLAST, samtools, GATK, Bioconductor and Biopython
- Reproducible workflow building with Nextflow, Snakemake or similar, and comfort in Linux and the command line; required here, not a bonus
- Strong statistics, and English at C1 or above, written and spoken
Nice to have
- AI/ML-assisted biology workflows or benchmarking
- Publications, patents or open-source bioinformatics software
- Single-cell analysis, structural biology, proteomics or drug discovery background
What it pays
micro1 states $45–90/hour. That is notably lower than micro1's earlier Computational Biology Expert listing, which shows $90–120/hour; this ad's ceiling is that one's floor. Placement within the band and payment cadence are not published.
Worth knowing
Good:
- No doctorate strictly needed; equivalent industry experience is accepted
- Pipeline engineering skills, often undervalued in pure research hiring, are the core of the brief
- 50 openings, High demand, open worldwide
Less good:
- Asks for more than the near-identical STEM Expert: Biology & Bioinformatics ad (workflow tooling and Linux are mandatory here) at the same rate
- Half the top rate of micro1's older computational biology listing
- The skill tags are largely chemistry tools (Gaussian, ORCA, NWChem, OpenBabel), and the preferred list ends in a stray "prediction/retrosynthesis" fragment, both signs of a reused chemistry template; confirm the project's actual focus at screening
- Some live communication expected; hours and duration not stated
About this listing
Found on micro1's referral jobs board and read on 18 October 2026, four days after it was posted. The rate, openings, location and requirements are micro1's; project length, weekly hours and the customer are not stated, and we could not verify them. If you hold a strong computational biology profile, check whether micro1's higher-paid listing is still open before settling on this band. See micro1.
