What you'll do
The material here is analysis pipelines rather than textbook questions. You design, evaluate and critique biology and bioinformatics workflows that feed AI benchmarks: genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic pipelines, run on data such as NGS reads, RNA-seq, single-cell experiments, variant calls and protein structures. A typical judgment is whether a parameter choice, a tool configuration or a statistical method would give a reproducible answer, and what you would change if not.
You also help steer how biology-focused AI models and tools are built and validated, and you document methods so the customer's team can reuse them. The ad asks for verbal as well as written explanation to non-specialists, so some meetings are likely. Remote, contractor engagement, hours not stated.
What you need
- A PhD in biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics or a related STEM field, or equivalent industry or research experience; the title says PhD, the requirements do not insist on one
- Deep expertise in at least one of: genomics and NGS, transcriptomics and single-cell, proteomics and structural biology, molecular and cell biology, systems biology and networks, drug discovery and computational pharmacology, biostatistics and ML for biology
- Hands-on experience analysing real biological data, not only methods knowledge
- Python and/or R, plus the standard tools of your area (BLAST, samtools, GATK, Bioconductor and Biopython are named)
- Solid statistics and English at C1 or above, written and spoken
Nice to have
- Reproducible workflow building in Nextflow or Snakemake, and comfort on the Linux command line
- AI/ML-assisted biology workflows or benchmarking experience
- Publications, patents or open-source bioinformatics contributions
What it pays
The ad states $45–90/hour. For comparison, micro1's existing Bioinformatics Scientist listing shows $90–120/hour, so the top of this band is where that one starts. micro1 does not say what decides placement inside the range, and no payment schedule or method appears on the listing.
Worth knowing
Good:
- The "or equivalent experience" route opens it to industry bioinformaticians without a doctorate
- Seven areas of biology qualify, from single-cell to computational pharmacology
- 50 openings, High demand badge, worldwide eligibility
- Pipeline review is close to what working bioinformaticians already do day to day
Less good:
- The band runs well below micro1's dedicated bioinformatics listings
- The card's skill tags include "AI/ML-assisted chemistry workflows", a sign the posting was adapted from a chemistry template; check the project scope at screening
- Verbal communication with collaborators is expected, so it is not fully asynchronous
- No hours, duration or customer name published
About this listing
micro1 posted this on its referral jobs board, and we read it on 18 October 2026, three days after posting. Pay, openings, location and qualifications are taken from the ad; hours, project length and how the rate is set are not published, and we could not verify them. A close sibling is micro1's Computational Biology & Bioinformatics Expert (PhD) ad at the same rate, which makes workflow tooling a hard requirement where this one only prefers it. See micro1.
