Skills
  • contract review
  • legal drafting
  • legal research
  • risk assessment
  • plain-language explanation

What you'll do

The work is contract risk review, written up the way you would for a client who is not a lawyer. You read sample or template contracts and other legal documents, judge them for clarity, enforceability and risk, and flag the clauses that would worry you, with detailed written commentary on each.

For every document you then write a short memo: the findings, the main risk areas and what you would change. Any research uses public sources only.

A large part of the brief is translation: explaining legal concepts to non-lawyers clearly and without talking down, which is a different skill from drafting for opposing counsel. If you have spent years explaining an indemnity cap to a founder or a procurement team, that is exactly the experience being bought.

Confidentiality and conflicts

The ad is specific here. All material is public or synthetic; no confidential or proprietary client information is used. You are still expected to follow conflict-of-interest and confidentiality protocols. That makes this easier to take on alongside a practice than projects that do not say where their documents come from, but check your firm's or employer's outside-work rules regardless.

Who fits

  • A JD with active or lapsed bar membership in any US jurisdiction
  • Four or more years of practice with a focus on document-heavy work (contracts, compliance, transactions)
  • Demonstrated skill in contract drafting, review and risk assessment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, especially explaining law to mixed audiences
  • A methodical approach and close attention to detail
  • A record of handling confidentiality and conflicts carefully

Interest in technology, AI or legal operations is a plus. No AI experience is needed. The location is "Remote" with no country named.

What it pays

$80–180/hour. The band is $100 wide and the listing does not say what places you in it, or whether the figure is hourly or a per-task equivalent. micro1 runs a second Lawyer listing on a much narrower and lower $60–75 band that asks for five years and multi-jurisdiction compliance work, so this one pays better for a lighter experience requirement.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A lapsed US bar membership qualifies, which opens the door to lawyers who have left practice
  • Public or synthetic material only, stated plainly
  • 50 openings, flagged high demand
  • Plain-English explanation is a skill many experienced lawyers have and few listings pay for
  • No AI background needed

Less good:

  • A $100-wide band with no stated basis for placement
  • No pay mechanism, weekly hours, start date or project length stated
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
  • The customer and what the trained system will be used for are not named
