What you'll do
Outpatient coding, done as annotation for an AI model. The records cover physician office visits, clinics, ambulatory surgery and hospital outpatient encounters, and for each one you:
- Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT or HCPCS procedure codes from the documentation
- Level Evaluation and Management visits under the official guidelines, by medical decision making or total time
- Apply outpatient conventions: outpatient diagnosis guidelines, modifiers, medical necessity and linking diagnoses to procedures
- Raise ambiguous documentation with the project team and settle it in writing or on calls
- Give feedback on guidelines and edge cases so the workflow and the model both improve
The volume work is routine coding; the value you add is in the edge cases, where your notes teach the model how a trained coder reasons about modifiers, E&M levels and medical necessity.
Who fits
- An active AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential, stated as required
- A solid grasp of ICD-10-CM, CPT and outpatient E&M leveling
- Hands-on outpatient coding: primary care, specialty clinics, ambulatory surgery centres, outpatient hospital departments
- Experience with office notes, procedure notes and operative reports
- Clear written and verbal communication and close attention to detail
- Access to current ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS Level II code books and the E&M guidelines
You need to be in the United States. No minimum years are stated and no prior AI experience is needed.
How this differs from micro1's other coding listings
micro1 already has a Medical Coder listing on this site, with the same CPC requirement and similar E&M work, at $25–40/hour with no country restriction. This newer posting adds HCPCS and the outpatient-specific conventions explicitly, is limited to the US, has 50 openings rather than 30, and pays less: $20–32/hour. If you qualify for both, the older listing has the higher band, provided it is still open. Inpatient coders with a CCS or CIC should look at Medical Coder (CCS / CIC) instead, which pays $50–70/hour.
What it pays
$20–32/hour, micro1's published band. That sits at the lower end of remote outpatient production coding in the US. No weekly hours, duration or pay structure is published.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A CPC is the main gate; no minimum years stated
- 50 openings, flagged high demand
- Edge-case feedback makes the work more interesting than straight production coding
Less good:
- The lowest band of micro1's current coding listings
- US only
- You supply your own current code books
- No hours, duration or pay structure published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits and your own tax to manage
