What you'll do

This is benchmark writing for chart reasoning, in the data science and statistics variant. You take a difficult visualisation and write a question that forces a model to actually reason from it (compute, compare, interpolate, infer) rather than read one value off an axis. Then you write the answer, fully worked.

The charts named are the ones analysts use rather than the ones in slide decks: Sankey diagrams, heatmaps, calibration curves, residual plots, correlation matrices and distribution plots. The work, per the ad:

  • Interpreting those visualisations with professional judgement and correct terminology
  • Designing objective, multi-step questions that go beyond surface chart reading
  • Writing precise answers with step-by-step explanations, including calculations, statistical inferences or modelling logic
  • Referencing units, scales, axes, legends and annotations exactly
  • Avoiding ambiguous or subjective prompts; every task must be objectively verifiable
  • Incorporating reviewer feedback and staying in touch with the project team

A calibration curve or a residual plot is a good example of why domain knowledge matters: the interesting question is not "what is the value at x = 0.6" but "what does this pattern say about the model", and that needs a statistician's eye to make unambiguous.

Who fits

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in data science, statistics, applied maths, computer science, operations research or a related field
  • At least two years of professional, academic or research work with statistical models, visualisations or analytical reporting
  • Fluency reading axes, legends, units, scales, confidence intervals and statistical annotations
  • Clear written and spoken English for explaining quantitative reasoning
  • Ideally, a second language relevant to your domain
  • Experience in technical documentation, assessment design, benchmark questions or data annotation helps

A bachelor's (or equivalent experience) and two years is an accessible bar for benchmark writing, and academic or research experience counts toward it.

What it pays

$25–50/hour, micro1's published band, the same across its chart-analysis listings. No compensation structure, weekly hours or duration is stated. For question-writing work, expect the first tasks to take much longer than later ones as you learn what the reviewers accept.

Siblings

micro1 runs this template across several domains at the same band: Medicine & Biostatistics, Financial & Operations and Chart & Data Visualization. Pick the one whose charts you read every day.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • 50 openings, marked high demand
  • An accessible entry bar for a benchmark-writing role
  • A second language is a plus, useful if you work bilingually
  • No country restriction stated

Less good:

  • $25 is a low floor for question design that needs statistical judgement
  • A 2x band with no stated basis for placement
  • No pay structure, hours or duration published
  • Writing genuinely unambiguous multi-step chart questions is harder than it sounds
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
