What you'll do
You write exam questions for a model that has to read charts. The chart types span two worlds:
- Markets: candlestick charts, yield curves, drawdown charts, market-volume charts
- Operations: control charts, Pareto charts, process flows, capacity and throughput charts
For each chart you draft a question that needs multi-step quantitative reasoning, not a read-off of the tallest bar, then supply a single unambiguous answer with a full written explanation and the calculation steps. Question types include graphical reasoning, comparisons, trend analysis, calculation and interpolation. Units, scales, timeframes and notation have to be exact, and subjective wording is out.
The hard constraint is objectivity. Every task must have one verifiable answer, so the craft is in choosing a question that is genuinely difficult yet still has only one defensible result. "Is this stock trending up?" fails; "by how many basis points did the 2s10s spread change between the two marked dates?" passes.
Who fits
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in finance, economics, business analytics, industrial engineering, operations management or a related field
- At least two years of professional, academic or research experience interpreting market data, risk metrics or operational performance charts
- Fluent reading of axes, units, legends, scales and annotations across chart types
- Clear written and spoken English for explaining quantitative reasoning
Nice to have: a second language relevant to finance or operations, and experience writing technical documentation, benchmark questions or annotation tasks.
What it pays
$25–50/hour, micro1's published figure. That is at the lower end of its finance-adjacent listings, which fits the lower entry bar (two years, bachelor's or equivalent). No compensation structure, weekly hours or duration is stated. Question-writing work of this kind is often measured by accepted tasks, so ask how output is counted.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Fifty openings, flagged high demand
- Operations and industrial engineering backgrounds qualify, not only finance
- Two years is an accessible bar, and academic or research experience counts
- A clear, well-defined task format
Less good:
- $25–50 is modest for question writing that needs quantitative depth
- Writing objective, hard questions is slower than it looks
- No hours, duration or pay structure published
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, no notice period, your own tax to manage
