What you'll do

Of micro1's three current Tamil listings, this is the one that asks for judgment rather than production. You listen to Tamil audio clips, some recorded by people and some generated by a model, and rate how native and fluent each one sounds against the project's guidelines: pronunciation, intonation and whether the language rings true.

For Tamil, "rings true" has specific content. The retroflex consonants (ṭ, ṇ, ḷ and the distinctive ḻ) are where synthetic speech often slips, and the gap between formal written Tamil and the way people actually speak means a model can be grammatically perfect and still sound like a newsreader reading a text message. Regional variation, from Chennai to Madurai to Jaffna, adds another layer. You notice these things and explain them in English that a non-Tamil speaker on the project team can act on.

Each rating carries a written justification. Consistency across clips is expected, ambiguities go to the project coordinators, and assigned review tasks have deadlines.

Who fits

  • Native-level Tamil, spoken and written
  • English at B2 or above, especially in writing
  • A background in linguistics, phonetics, voice, music or audio engineering is preferred
  • Experience in audio analysis, transcription or linguistic assessment is highly valued
  • Media, communications or teaching experience is an asset

Preferred rather than mandatory, and no AI experience needed.

What it pays

$30–65/hour, micro1's published band, shared with its Polish, Russian, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese bilingual listings. Within Tamil it is the clear top: the Tamil Audio Recording Expert listing pays $10–30 and needs your own studio equipment, and the Tamil transcription listing pays $10–24. The floor here is at the recording role's ceiling. No payment schedule is published, and the ad does not say what decides placement in the band.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • The highest-paying Tamil work micro1 currently lists, with no equipment needed
  • 100 openings and a "High demand" tag
  • Tamil teachers, broadcasters and linguists are a natural fit
  • No country restriction stated

Less good:

  • A 2x-plus spread with no published placement criteria
  • Nativeness ratings are subjective, so the English write-ups are the real work
  • No weekly hours, project length or volume are stated
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
  • The customer is not named
