What you'll do
Spoken Urdu shifts a lot between formal broadcast language, everyday Karachi or Lahore speech, Hyderabadi and Lucknowi varieties, and diaspora conversation thick with English, and the ad asks for transcripts that stay faithful to whatever was actually said. You transcribe Urdu audio and video, then review and refine transcripts others have produced so they are clear, consistent and true to the recording.
Each transcript also carries structure: you annotate it with metadata and speaker details as the project guidelines require, so the data shows who spoke when as well as what was said. Expect to draw on Urdu grammar, spelling conventions and colloquial expressions constantly. The ad describes working remotely alongside other linguistic experts and project managers, raising queries and suggesting process improvements, and meeting quality standards on set timelines.
Who fits
- Native or near-native Urdu, including regional dialects and contemporary usage
- Experience in transcription, translation or linguistic annotation, especially in Urdu
- A very low tolerance for errors in your own output
- Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining your choices to others
- Familiarity with digital transcription tools and handling multimedia files
- Comfort on remote collaboration platforms
All listed as preferred. The ad states that no AI experience is needed.
What it pays
$10–22/hour, the same band micro1 publishes for its Bengali transcription listing and slightly below the Tamil and Telugu ones at $10–24. Where you land in the band is not explained, nor whether it is per hour worked or per audio hour. No payment schedule is published.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Speaker labelling and metadata work is a transferable annotation skill
- Translation experience counts as relevant background
- No AI experience needed
- Remote, with no country restriction stated
Less good:
- Only 10 openings
- The pay spread is wide and the ad does not say what moves you up it
- No hours, project length or volume published
- The customer is not named
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
