What you'll do
You turn spoken Tamil into precise text. The audio is Tamil throughout, and the ad stresses faithful representation of spoken language, which in Tamil means writing what speakers actually say rather than silently converting it into the formal written register. Transcripts are then proofread and edited for consistency, grammar and guideline adherence.
Beyond the transcript, you annotate linguistic features and nuances when the specifications ask for it, and flag audio that is unclear or inconsistent instead of guessing. The ad expects comprehension across "diverse dialects and accents", so Sri Lankan and Indian Tamil, and the regional varieties within Tamil Nadu, are likely to turn up in the same queue.
Communication runs both ways: written and verbal feedback to project coordinators, in Tamil and English. Assignments come with deadlines, and the ad warns that project needs evolve.
Who fits
- Native or near-native Tamil with strong comprehension of dialects and accents
- Experience in transcription or linguistic annotation, ideally on digital projects
- Accuracy that holds up under time pressure
- Good written and verbal communication in both Tamil and English
- Familiarity with transcription software and digital collaboration tools
- The ability to manage several assignments independently in a remote setup
These are preferred qualifications, and no AI experience is needed.
What it pays
$10–24/hour, micro1's published band, the lowest of its three Tamil listings. The Tamil Audio Recording Expert role pays $10–30 (but needs a home studio), and the Tamil Bilingual Expert evaluation role pays $30–65 with no equipment. If your English writing is strong, the bilingual listing is worth applying to alongside this one. No payment schedule is published, and the ad does not say whether pay is per hour worked or per audio hour.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Near-native Tamil speakers are welcome, not only natives
- Skills that transfer to the better-paid Tamil evaluation work
- A long list of named skills makes it clear what the screen will look for
- Remote, no country restriction stated
Less good:
- A $10 floor and $24 ceiling, low for careful multi-dialect transcription
- Only 10 openings
- Accuracy "under time constraints" suggests throughput pressure
- No weekly hours, project length or volume are stated
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
- The customer is not named
