Data annotation jobs without a degree

Overview · 1 week ago

Plenty of data annotation jobs are open without a degree, but not the best-paid ones. Across the 699 listings on this site, 126 state that no degree is asked for and 216 name a degree or professional qualification. Here is where each group sits and what it pays.

How many listings skip the degree

We went through the requirements of all 699 roles on this site on 29 September 2026. The split:

  • 126 state that no degree is asked for: Mercor posts 62 of them, micro1 52 and Invisible Technologies 12.
  • 216 name a degree or professional qualification, as a requirement or a stated preference: a PhD on 108, a medical qualification on 45, a law degree or bar admission on 44, and a bachelor's or master's on 88 (some name more than one).
  • The remaining 357 say neither. Silence is not a green light; read the requirements for experience that does the same filtering.

So data annotation jobs without a degree are common, but the degree-free roles pay less. The median top of band is $60 an hour on the no-degree listings against $110 on the ones that name a degree.

Where the no-degree work is

Basic annotation and evaluation. micro1's Data Annotator ($6–8) and video annotation ($8–10) roles ask for no degree and no AI background. Invisible's voice, audio and localisation evaluators pay a flat $17, with no degree or years of experience named.

Listening and language work. Mercor's Audiobook QA listings, such as Italian, pay $15–25 and set no degree or years minimum. Its AI Safety Experts family, such as English and Thai, also states no degree requirement. Note the contrast with Mercor's separate bilingual generalist AI safety family, which does ask for a bachelor's, completed or in progress.

Knowing a piece of software. Mercor's application-user roles pay $30–70 for people who use a tool daily, from Photoshop to Excel on macOS, with no degree stated.

A record instead of a certificate. Some of the best-paid no-degree listings are technical roles where proof of work replaces the credential. micro1's open-source GitHub maintainer role pays $150–300 and names no degree, and its STEM Expert listing says outright that none is required. These are not beginner jobs; the bar is shown work.

Where a degree is not optional

Expert work is different. Medical roles here typically ask for an MD or a licence, legal ones for a JD or bar admission, and much of the science evaluation for a PhD. Of the 216 listings that name a qualification, 141 are senior. The health and law pages are almost entirely credentialed work.

A degree in progress sometimes counts: several Mercor bilingual roles accept a bachelor's that is not finished yet.

How to read a listing

  1. Look for the explicit line. "No degree required" and "bachelor's or equivalent experience" are different offers.
  2. Check the substitute. No-degree roles usually filter on something else: native fluency, a portfolio, years with a tool.
  3. Check the country field. Dropping the degree does not drop residence rules; see who can actually do this work.
