What you'll do

This is the North American English edition of Mercor's audiobook evaluation project, and the one with the most competition for places: English is the language almost every audiobook fan can apply in. You listen to text-to-speech narration of books and annotate each place it goes wrong, marking the precise span and tagging the error type in Mercor's review tool.

The categories are skipped, added or mispronounced words; numbers read incorrectly; abbreviations expanded wrongly; unnatural phrasing or intonation; and audio artefacts. English-specific trouble spots include heteronyms that depend on context ("read", "lead", "live", "record"), fantasy and foreign names, "Dr." as Doctor versus Drive, years versus plain numbers, and dialogue delivered with the same flat energy as narration. You also rate how satisfying each listen was overall.

Who fits

  • Native or near-native US / North American English, and a regular, opinionated audiobook listener
  • Some experience with annotation, labelling, transcription, proofreading or linguistics
  • Accuracy that holds up across long listening sessions
  • Around 20 hours a week available, roughly four hours a day

A plus: AI training data, model evaluation or audio QA experience, and a background in editing, voice acting or audio production. People who have narrated or produced audiobooks, or proofed them for ACX-style platforms, bring directly relevant ears.

Mercor prefers US-based applicants but does not require US residence, so this page sets no country restriction.

What it pays

$20–25 per hour, published by Mercor. That is $5 an hour above every other language in this audiobook family (Italian, German, French, Dutch, both Portuguese variants and US Spanish all sit at $15–20). The ad does not say how the rate within the band is decided.

Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise. H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are excluded.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • The highest rate of the audiobook QA variants
  • No degree or minimum years
  • Flexible schedule, remote, weekly pay

Less good:

  • $20–25 is still modest by US standards for skilled review work
  • Likely the most applicants of any variant, so a clear annotation background helps
  • Sustained listening is tiring and quality has to hold for hours
  • Contractor terms with no benefits; the project can end early
  • Client, duration and tooling not disclosed
