What you'll do
The coder's seat in Mercor's multilingual documentation cohort, alongside the physician listings. Where physicians judge clinical soundness, you judge whether the documentation supports the codes: whether an AI-generated note contains what a coder needs, and whether the codes assigned actually follow from what was written.
The ad breaks the work into three parts:
- Documentation and coding review: checking clinical documentation for accuracy, completeness and coding integrity; evaluating AI-generated notes and summaries against real documentation and coding standards; validating alignment between documentation and assigned codes
- Annotation and feedback: annotating documentation to detailed guidelines, flagging omissions, inaccuracies and gaps in AI output, and writing structured feedback for engineering and product teams
- Knowledge contribution: input on annotation guidelines and documentation standards, and raising questions where guidance is ambiguous
If you have done CDI queries, the rhythm will feel familiar: the core question is the same one you ask a provider, only now the author is a model and it cannot answer back.
Who fits
- An active certification: at least one of CCDS, CHC, CCS or CPC
- ICD-10 coding experience
- Currently working in medical coding, CDI or a closely related documentation role
- US-based
- Beyond English, advanced (C1 or above) speaking, listening and writing in at least one other language
- At least 10 hours a week
Preferred: extra certifications (CRC, CDIP or similar), Epic familiarity, HCC or risk-adjustment coding, and prior AI annotation or model evaluation work with strong reviews.
Unlike the physician versions of this cohort, which restrict you to a published language list, this ad names no list: any second language at C1 appears to count. Still worth confirming during application if yours is less common.
What it pays
$45–65 per hour for at least 10 hours a week, so roughly $450–650 weekly at the minimum. Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise, as an independent contractor. For comparison, Mercor's Non-Physician Admin listing, which also wants coders but for scenario authoring and has no language requirement, pays $50–65.
Worth knowing
Good:
- A certification plus a second language is a rare combination, so the applicant pool is small
- Any second language appears to qualify
- 10 hours a week, flexible, fits beside a coding job
- No prior AI experience required
Less good:
- $45 floor is below the admin authoring listing, for comparable expertise
- You must be currently working in coding or CDI
- US-based only; H-1B and STEM OPT candidates cannot be supported
- The healthcare AI partner is not named
- Contractor engagement; projects can be extended, shortened or ended early
