  • golden datasets
  • llm evaluation

What you'll do

This is a six-month, full-time seat embedded with a leading AI lab's research and program management teams, working in the lab's own tools on lab-issued equipment, and sitting in the office in the Bay Area several days a week when required.

Your insurance knowledge is the substance of the job. The ad sets out four strands:

  • Data QA and review: vet insurance knowledge-work tasks and model outputs, catching thin reasoning, flawed actuarial assumptions, misapplied policy language, and answers that sound right but would fail professional scrutiny
  • Instruction specs and golden datasets: write the specs, produce golden solutions to insurance and actuarial problems, and define new tasks that mirror real practice
  • Benchmarks: design hard insurance tasks and evaluation sets, and help build insurance-specific skills and tools with the researchers
  • Calibration: work with researchers and adjacent specialists to turn tacit insurance judgment into explicit, teachable criteria

Compared with Mercor's remote Insurance Actuarial Specialists and Insurance Underwriting Specialists contracts, the difference is proximity: here you shape the benchmarks with the researchers rather than working through a task queue.

Who qualifies

  • A credential: either FSA, ASA, FCAS or ACAS, or an active state insurance licence in adjusting, underwriting or broking (an all-lines adjuster licence is the example). Actuarial candidates also need a degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics or a related field
  • 4+ years at a carrier, reinsurer, broker, adjusting firm or insurance regulator
  • Genuine specialisation: life and annuity, group life and disability, P&C, health, reinsurance, pricing and reserving, ERM, claims adjudication or underwriting
  • Senior progression with real ownership of a book, a reserve or a claims portfolio (Senior Actuary, AVP, Claims Manager, Head of Underwriting and similar)
  • Hands-on professional use of LLMs, and the judgment to spot a plausible wrong answer
  • 40 hours a week for an initial 6 months
  • Living in the Bay Area, or relocating there at your own cost before the start; no relocation help

The licensed-adjuster route is worth noting: most expert AI roles in insurance are closed to non-actuaries, and this one is not.

What it pays

$60–100 per hour. At 40 hours a week that is roughly $125,000–208,000 annualised over a year, though the initial term is 6 months.

Employment terms

The role is a full-time W-2 position with Cincinnatus LLC, a staffing company separate from Mercor that acts as employer of record and handles payroll, benefits and compliance. The ad does not publish pay frequency or visa terms; ask Cincinnatus.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • W-2 employment with benefits, not freelance contracting
  • Direct work with lab researchers on benchmarks
  • Adjusters, underwriters and brokers qualify, not only actuaries

Less good:

  • Hybrid Bay Area only, with self-funded relocation
  • Full-time 40 hours for six months rules out keeping a day job
  • A wide $40 band with no published basis for placement
  • The AI lab is not named
