What you'll do
Mercor is staffing two Amazon Sonic audit collections in Hindi, and your job is to review data other annotators and automated systems have already produced.
- Multilingual Transcription Audit: listen to a recording of human or agent speech, read the annotator's transcript, and decide whether it captures what was actually said. You apply a fixed set of error codes, give a pass or fail, and write a short rationale.
- Forced Alignment Audit: check word-level segments an automatic aligner created. For each word you confirm the start and end timestamps and that the reference text matches what was spoken; where the machine is wrong you move a boundary, split or merge segments, add a missing one or delete an empty one.
Hindi raises its own audit questions. Everyday speech mixes in English words freely, so deciding how code-switched terms should be written under the rulebook comes up constantly, as do schwa deletion at word ends, nasalisation marks, and nukta sounds that speakers may or may not pronounce. The ad says both collections run at 5.00 audit hours per task and every call needs a written reason, so this is slow, deliberate work.
A short calibration phase comes before production.
Who qualifies
- Native or near-native Hindi as spoken in India: born and raised where it is dominant, or fully fluent with five or more years living in such a region. The ad calls this a hard requirement.
- Strong written English, because the conventions, error codes and your rationales are all in English
- Discipline in applying a written standard the same way across hundreds of judgments; transcription, subtitling, localisation, linguistic annotation or QA experience is a strong signal
- Careful listening: telling similar sounds apart, finding word boundaries in continuous speech, and separating real ambiguity from annotator error
Helpful but not required: AI annotation or evaluation experience, phonetics or linguistics training, and familiarity with waveform or audio editing tools.
The ad sets no current residence requirement, so this listing carries no country restriction.
What it pays
$18 per hour, the lowest rate of the nine Sonic audit languages Mercor posted on the same day. Chinese pays $21.50, Korean and Portuguese $25, Japanese $37.50, Italian and Spanish $39.50, and French and German $41.50 for the identical brief. The ad does not explain the differences.
Weekly payment through Stripe or Wise. H-1B and STEM OPT candidates are excluded.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Audit work, a step above raw transcription, and good experience for later QA roles
- In USD, $18 an hour is competitive for Hindi transcription work based in India
- Clear rules and fixed error codes, with a calibration phase before production (the ad does not say whether calibration is paid)
Less good:
- Less than half the rate of the European language versions of the same task
- Forced alignment on waveforms is fiddly and slow until you are practised
- Every verdict needs a written English rationale
- Contractor terms; hours and project length are not stated
