What you'll do
You bring a tester's habits to an AI training project. That means designing test cases and scenarios that check model outputs against defined requirements, running them, and writing up what fails and why. Alongside the testing you review, annotate and label datasets so the model trains on cleaner input, and you look across many predictions for patterns of error rather than one-off bugs.
Part of the job is shaping the method itself: micro1 asks contributors to help refine testing approaches built for AI systems, where "expected output" is often a range of acceptable answers rather than a single value. Expect plenty of written documentation and back-and-forth with the project team when requirements are unclear.
Who fits
- Hands-on software QA experience, including test planning and defect reporting
- Prior data labeling, annotation, RLHF or model evaluation work helps
- English at B2 or above, since findings and reports are written
All three are listed as preferred rather than required, and the ad says no prior AI experience is needed. In practice a QA background is what the role is built around.
What it pays
micro1 publishes $63–120/hour. The ad does not say whether pay is hourly or per task, how placement within the band is decided, or how many hours a week are on offer. Plan around the floor until an offer says otherwise.
How it differs from the sibling listing
micro1 also runs QA Engineer: 2D & Creative Applications at $90–175/hour. That one is about testing specific creative software; this one is general AI output testing plus data annotation, with a lower band and many more openings.
Worth knowing
Good:
- 120 openings, flagged high demand
- Conventional QA skills transfer directly; no AI background needed
- A $63 floor is unusually high for work that includes annotation
- No country restriction stated
Less good:
- Pay structure, weekly hours and project length are not published
- Annotation and labeling can be repetitive next to test design
- Contractor engagement: no benefits, your own tax to manage
- The customer is not named
About this listing
Posted by micro1 on its own jobs portal; we read the ad on 18 October 2026. The $63–120/hour band, 120 openings and the qualifications above are its published text. micro1 titles it simply "QA Engineer"; we added the detail in parentheses to separate it from other micro1 QA listings. Location is "Remote" with no country named, so we have left eligibility open. See micro1.
