Federal Contract Specialist
micro1: pay and who it accepts · Posted
What you'll do
You turn what you know about government procurement into test material for AI. That means writing realistic acquisition scenarios, then detailed reference answers showing the contracting decision a competent specialist would reach. You also review scenarios and answers from other subject matter experts, correct what is wrong, and check everything against the current Federal Acquisition Regulation.
Coverage runs across the acquisition lifecycle, both pre-award and post-award. Collaboration is asynchronous, through project coordinators and other specialists, so expect written back-and-forth rather than meetings.
Who qualifies
- Current or previous federal contracting experience, including OPM series GS-1102 or equivalent acquisition work
- A strong grasp of the FAR and the acquisition lifecycle
- The ability to explain contracting decisions clearly, in writing and out loud
- Based in the United States
Preferred: experience building acquisition scenarios or training material, a current or previous contracting officer warrant, and FAC-C or DAWIA contracting certification. No AI background is needed.
What it pays
The ad states $60 to $80 an hour as an independent contractor, part time and project based. It gives no weekly hours, project length or payment schedule.
Worth knowing
Good:
- Former 1102s qualify, so retired or private-sector specialists are in scope
- Writing scenarios and reference answers is close to mentoring a junior specialist
- Part-time work that fits around another role
Less good:
- Only 10 openings
- Project based, with no stated length
- Current federal employees should clear outside work with their ethics office first, since this is paid work for a private customer

How to get hired
- After you apply, the ad says you get an AI interview on your contracting experience, your knowledge of procedures, and how you apply them to realistic scenarios. Our guide to micro1's Zara interview explains the format.
- Lead with your series and warrant level if you held one, your agency, and the contract types and dollar ranges you handled.
- Pick one acquisition you know well, and practise explaining a single decision (source selection method, a protest risk, a modification) with the FAR part behind it.
- Check any FAR citation you plan to use against the current text, because the role is checked on current requirements.
