Medical Chart Reviewer

micro1: pay and who it accepts · Posted

What you'll do

You audit inpatient medical charts the way a coding auditor would: read the admission notes, progress notes, operative reports, consults, lab and imaging results and the discharge summary, then check whether the assigned diagnosis and procedure codes are supported. That includes code sequencing, Present on Admission indicators and the final MS-DRG. When the coding is wrong you say how: under-coded, over-coded, or a missed CC or MCC.

What makes it AI training is the write-up. Your findings, the documentation gaps you flag and the query opportunities you spot become the reference material a model learns from. The work is remote, on a contractor basis, with 40 openings listed.

What you need

  • A US-based remote setup (the listing says US - Remote)
  • Hands-on chart review, coding audit or clinical documentation improvement (CDI) experience
  • Working command of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and MS-DRG methodology
  • Written and verbal communication that stays precise on ambiguous documentation
  • Access to current ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets, the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting and an MS-DRG grouper

Nice to have

  • An active AHIMA CCS, AAPC CIC or AAPC CPC credential, or an RN or other clinical credential with chart review or CDI experience
  • Chart experience across acute care, teaching hospitals, surgical, trauma, oncology, cardiology and transplant cases

The ad lists all of these as preferred, and says no prior AI experience is required.

What it pays

micro1 lists $50–70/hour for this role. The ad does not say what places you inside that band, how many hours a week the project offers or how long it runs. Payment method and schedule are not published.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • It uses a skill you already have: if you audit inpatient charts today, the task will look familiar
  • A $50–70 band is a solid hourly rate for remote coding work
  • 40 openings, and no AI background needed

Less good:

  • The listing expects you to own your code books and grouper access
  • Credentials and audit experience are the real filter; a general nursing background without chart review may not be enough
  • No hours, duration or customer named, and contractor terms mean no benefits
  • Complex inpatient cases (transplant, trauma) take time to review properly, so speed targets, if any, are unknown

How to get hired

  • Screening: micro1 screens through an AI interview run by Zara, followed by a hiring manager review; the listing does not publish anything role-specific beyond that. Our micro1 interview guide covers what Zara asks.
  • Profile first: lead with your credential (CCS, CIC, CPC, RN) and the setting you audited in, such as acute care or transplant, plus the volume of charts you reviewed.
  • Preparation: before the interview, rework one chart you know well: state the principal diagnosis, sequencing, POA indicators and DRG, then list what a query would have to ask.
  • Evidence: be ready to explain a past case where you changed a code or DRG and what in the documentation justified it.
