Maltese Language Expert

What you'll do

Maltese is the only Semitic language written in Latin script and the only one in the EU, which makes it awkward for models trained mostly on English and Italian. Your job is to catch what goes wrong: Semitic verb forms handled like Romance ones, English or Italian phrasing leaking through, unnatural loanwords, wrong articles or prepositions. You review AI output, write gold-standard Maltese answers across areas such as customer support, education and translation, and rank competing responses. Feedback is in English. The work is hourly and remote.

Who fits

  • Native or near-native Maltese, with strong reading and writing
  • English at C1 or above
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in linguistics, Maltese, Maltese or English literature, communications, journalism, translation or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • 3+ years in writing, editing, localization, translation, content QA, journalism, education or similar
  • Comfort across registers, including Maltese-English code-switching

Prior AI data training or QA work is described as strongly preferred. The ad does not mark an experience level, so we have read the 3+ years as a junior-to-mid bar.

What it pays

The ad says up to $40 an hour, twice the ceiling on the Malayalam and Marathi expert roles, and one step below the $45 offered for the Maltese Team Lead. As always it is an upper bound; the ad does not publish a typical rate. Payment terms and the hiring process are covered on the company page.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • A small language market, so few people can do this at a professional level
  • A higher ceiling than most language roles in this group
  • Code-switching is explicitly part of the brief, which suits how Maltese is really written

Less good:

  • Open only to applicants in Malta
  • Maltese work is likely to be limited in volume; the ad gives no hours or project length
  • Feedback in English means the job is not purely Maltese
