What is domain expert?

Written

A trainer hired for specialist knowledge, such as a lawyer, doctor, engineer or PhD researcher. Expert roles pay well above general tasks.

In AI training, a domain expert is a trainer hired for specialist knowledge rather than general skills: a physician, lawyer, accountant, engineer, scientist, or a native speaker of a less common language. Expert roles are where most of the growth and the highest pay in this field are.

Why labs need experts

Models are now good enough that their mistakes are subtle. Only someone with real expertise can tell whether a drug interaction warning is complete, a contract clause is enforceable or a proof is valid. That makes expert judgment the scarce input.

How experts are hired

Platforms ask for proof of credentials, such as a degree, licence or years of practice, and test domain knowledge in the assessment. Work is usually hourly and part-time. Rates for doctors, lawyers and senior engineers often exceed $100 an hour; see highest paying roles.

Example

A licensed pharmacist joins a project for ten hours a week, writing difficult medication questions and grading how well three models answer them.
