What is independent contractor?

Written

How nearly all AI training platforms engage workers: you invoice or are paid per task, with no employment benefits, and you handle your own taxes.

Most AI training platforms engage workers as independent contractors, also called freelancers, rather than as employees. You agree to do work under a contract, and you are paid for the work, without a salary or employee benefits.

What that usually means

  • No paid holiday, sick pay, pension contributions or health insurance from the platform.
  • No guaranteed hours: work depends on available projects.
  • You are usually responsible for your own taxes and any registration your country requires for self-employment.
  • You can typically work for several platforms at once, unless a contract says otherwise.

Taxes and paperwork

Platforms commonly ask for tax forms during onboarding, and some issue annual income statements. Rules differ a lot between countries, so check how freelance income is treated where you live, and keep your own records of what each platform paid you. This page is general information, not tax advice.

Before you sign

Read the contract for confidentiality terms, who owns the work you produce, how either side can end the arrangement, and when payments are made. Our FAQ covers common questions about pay and eligibility.

Example

A lawyer works 10 hours a week for two platforms. Each pays in US dollars to a payment service. At year end, they declare both as self-employed income in their own country.
