Military Legal Advisor

What you'll do

You work on a customer's project that defines and tests the line between lawful and unlawful in defense and international law. You write detailed boundary scenarios about lawful policy review and the limits of military support, and you check that the project's taxonomy boundaries hold up under the law of armed conflict (LOAC) and wider international law.

You then grade model answers on the soundness of the legal reasoning, how clearly limits are stated and how the model handles legal uncertainty, and you flag places where it refuses to engage with a legitimate policy or legal question. You also review disputed cases with other subject-matter experts to reach consensus. The work is remote and contractor-based; the ad does not state weekly hours.

What you need

The ad lists these as preferred:

  • A background as a Judge Advocate (JAG) or substantial experience in international humanitarian law and LOAC
  • Fluency in rules of engagement and lawful boundaries in military and surveillance operations
  • Experience advising on operational legal matters in military or governmental settings
  • Skill at explaining complex legal ideas in writing and speech
  • Policy review, case differentiation and legal-uncertainty reasoning

Nice to have

  • Teaching, consulting or advisory work in military-legal or international-law settings
  • Familiarity with AI governance, ethics or AI-related legal frameworks

What it pays

micro1 states $70–120/hour. The ad does not say whether pay is hourly or per task, or how the band is applied. Among micro1's defense and humanitarian posts published at the same time, this has the highest band.

Worth knowing

Good:

  • No prior AI experience is required; legal expertise is the bar
  • Remote, no country restriction stated, 3 openings and a "High demand" badge
  • Substantive work on live legal-policy questions rather than generic review

Less good:

  • Very narrow specialism: LOAC and military-legal practice
  • Hours, task volume and project length are not stated
  • The subject matter is sensitive; expect dual-use legal questions
  • Contractor engagement: no benefits, and you handle your own tax
